The Civic Media Institute, a Brazilian non-profit organization of recognized public utility, was founded on the belief that communication and innovation are key allies in building a better and fairer society. Established by award-winning TV producer Daniel Xavier and jurist Rafael Ferreira, its projects and initiatives are committed to defending citizens’ right to information, quality education, and culture, while promoting and encouraging democratic freedoms, particularly freedom of expression. The goal of the Civic Media Institute is to promote education as outlined in the Brazilian Educational Guidelines Law, including the promotion of information and culture, as well as intellectual, artistic, and scientific activities.
Our Advisory Board is composed of prominent figures in communication, journalism, non-profit work, education, and Brazilian arts. Council members serve on a voluntary basis and are not responsible for decision-making.
Journalist and TV anchor Bárbara Pereira holds a Master’s in Education and a PhD in Social Memory from UNIRIO. With extensive experience in television programming focused on education and citizenship, Bárbara has worked with media outlets such as TV Escola, Canal Saúde/FIOCRUZ, and TVE – TV Educativa do Rio de Janeiro. She currently works at Sputnik Brazil and also hosts the Jabuticaba Sem Caroço podcast.
Iconic and award-winning Brazilian hip-hop artist Marcelo Santos, aka Xis, has more than 30 years of experience in national urban culture entrepreneurship. The multifaceted and endlessly creative Xis has hosted and starred in several TV and radio programs, including stints with Jovem Pan, SBT, Canal 21, PlayTV, and Rede Mix FM, among others.
Jamil Chade has been a news correspondent in Europe for two decades and has his office at the UN headquarters in Geneva. Having traveled to more than 70 countries, he regularly contributes to international outlets such as BBC, CNN, CCTV, Al Jazeera, as well as national outlets like Uol and Band News. Chade is a three-time finalist for the Jabuti, a prestigious Brazilian literary award, and was twice named the best Brazilian correspondent abroad.
Daiene Mendes is a promising star of the new generation of Brazilian journalism. She was a correspondent for the British newspaper The Guardian and is the founder of the projects Favela em Pauta, a journalistic website dedicated to peripheral communities, and Favelê, which aims to encourage reading in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. She is the coordinator of the local journalism support program for Reporters Without Borders and a Fellow at the Ford Foundation.
Born in Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, Karen de Souza began her career as a journalist at Rede InterTV, a Globo affiliate in the area. She had an impactful tenure at Canal Futura, where she served as the editor and anchor of several series, and has extensive experience in producing online video – both in front of and behind the camera. Karen is also a content coordinator at Play9.
